If you’re getting an error in SQL Server that reads “The least function requires 1 to 254 arguments“, it’s probably because you’re either passing too few or too many arguments to the LEAST()
function.
As the error message states, the LEAST()
function requires at least 1 argument, and no more than 254 arguments.
To fix this issue, be sure to pass at least 1 argument, and no more than 254 arguments when using the LEAST()
function.
Example of Error
Here’s an example of code that produces the error:
SELECT LEAST();
Result:
Msg 189, Level 15, State 1, Server 19ff05754025, Line 1 The least function requires 1 to 254 arguments.
In this example I didn’t pass any arguments.
We get the same error when we pass too many arguments:

In this case I passed 255 arguments, which is over the 254 limit.
And here’s and example that references a database table:
SELECT LEAST() FROM Scores;
Result:
Msg 189, Level 15, State 1, Server 39dddda85240, Line 1 The least function requires 1 to 254 arguments.
By not passing any arguments, I didn’t specify any columns to evaluate.
Solution
As mentioned, to fix this issue, be sure to pass at least 1 argument, and no more than 254 arguments when using the LEAST()
function.
Example:
SELECT LEAST( 3, 2 );
Result:
2
And here’s an example that references a table:
SELECT
LEAST( Game1, Game2, Game3 ) AS "Lowest Score"
FROM Scores;
Result:
Lowest Score ------------ 15 19 10
In this case Game1
, Game2
, and Game3
are the names of columns in the Scores
table, and for each row I returned the lowest value out of all three columns.
